With the end of the ice age around 10,000 BC, forests expanded, and the rise of sea levels cut off Britain from continental Europe. Tools were refined, dogs domesticated and humans spread, reaching northern Scotland.

The inhabitants of Mesolithic Britain eventually adopted the farming of crops and domestic animals.
