Although Britain was inhabited for hundreds of thousands of years prior to the Roman conquest, its pre-Roman inhabitants did not have a written language, so, their history and culture are only known through archaeological finds.

The Greek navigator Pytheas, who explored the coastal region of Britain around 325 BC, produced our oldest surviving written record of Britain.

During the prehistoric period, Britain was the recipient of foreign technology and culture from mainland Europe, and the archaeological record shows that its inhabitants adopted foreign customs.
